The Marine Aquarium Trieste is located on the city's waterfront in the former Central fish market. The building of the fishpond was built in 1913 on the left side there is a "water tower", which originally contained seawater. The aquarium was founded in 1933 and consists of 25 tanks that reconstruct the different marine environments. Of the two exhibition floors the lower houses the aquarium, while the upper one has been prepared a vivarium, with terrariums and a central tank in which has been recreated the biotope of the karst ponds. The fauna hosted at the Civic Aquarius Marino is constituted by marine species coming mainly from the Gulf of Trieste. The aquarium hosts mainly Adriatic species such as mollusks, echinoderms, crustaceans, annelids and coelenterates. Downstairs the large bath houses some sharks and rays coming from South Africa. the first floor is occupied by the aquarium vivarium where they hosted many species of amphibians, freshwater fish and reptiles. A large terrarium with a karst pond welcomes common toads, green frogs and toads.
