The project is supported by the 2023 Photography Strategy promoted by the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.
Correspondences is the winning project of Strategia Fotografia 2023, the call promoted by the Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture, which involves seven emerging Italian artists, inviting them to produce an unpublished work starting from the comparison with the important photography collections held by FMAV. All the works created will become part of the Civic Gallery Collection of the Municipality of Modena, managed by FMAV. The seven emerging Italian artists involved are Silvia Bigi, Federico Clavarino, Teresa Giannico, Orecchie d'Asino, The Cool Couple, Vaste Programme, Alba Zari. Chiara Dall'Olio and Daniele De Luigi, curators of the project, asked them to choose works by masters of the past, present in the collections managed by FMAV, in which they could find a root of their work or a resonance of their practice. The new productions, conceived and created for the occasion by the invited artists, are therefore not born from a stylistic filiation, but are contemporary images that testify to the lines of continuity in the history of photography and at the same time establish an intergenerational dialectical comparison.
The new works allow us to investigate the use of photography by a new generation of artists, characterized by a strong attention to the construction of the image and by contamination with other media (video, sculpture, performance, sound, new technologies), and they will be presented in the exhibition alongside the works of the masters Joan Fontcuberta, Elisa Leonelli, Richard Misrach, Thomas Ruff, AhlamShibli, Franco Vaccari, Masao Yamamoto, in an installation designed together with the young protagonists. In choosing the invited artists, attention was also paid to those who use new technologies in photographic production, to confirm FMAV's commitment to supporting the media arts, Modena being a UNESCO creative city in this area, and to project the collections into the future.
