The fortress of Monte Altura is a real fortified citadel built in 1887 for the control and protection of the north-eastern coast of Sardinia, a perfect combination of the evergreen vegetation of the Mediterranean scrub, the rocks left naturally emerging from the walls and the creation of the the facility itself, built with local rock so as to blend in even more with the typical lunar landscape of Gallura.

The fortified citadel of Monte Altura still retains buildings in a good state of preservation after over 200 years and gives us all the rooms of the time, such as the numerous warehouses, ammunition depots, the quarters of the officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers, and even the dormitories where they ate, the wash houses, the powder magazine and the telegraph office.

The emerald colors of the sea act as a backdrop to this 19th century military work, the horizon slightly dampened by the lines of the imposing mountains of Corsica which is only 15 kilometers from the Palaese coast and which is clearly visible especially during the many clear days.
