The show

From 22 March to 21 July 2024 the Palazzo Strozzi Foundation presents Anselm Kiefer. Fallen Angels, a new major exhibition conceived and created together with one of the most important artists of the 20th and 21st centuries: a journey through historical works and new productions, including a new major work created in dialogue with the Renaissance courtyard.

Curated by Arturo Galansino, General Director of the Palazzo Strozzi Foundation, the exhibition allows you to come into direct contact with the great German master, famous for a profound and stratified research on the themes of memory, myth, history, literature and philosophy.

The expression “fallen angels” indicates the angels expelled from Paradise following their rebellion against God. This symbolic image, a representation of all humanity, becomes the starting point of the exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi: a journey through allegories, figures and forms who reflect on identity, poetry, historical events, different philosophical thoughts. Using painting, sculpture, installation and photography, Kiefer's art offers a path of introspection on the human being, exploring the connections between past, present and future.

With bold use of diverse materials and techniques, Kiefer creates works celebrated for a strong physical and tactile presence, establishing an immediate and authentic connection with the viewer. Deeply interested in their alchemical value, Kiefer transforms raw materials such as lead, wax, seeds, earth, flowers, sand and ash into imposing and evocative works, made of dense stratifications. Using electrolysis or fire, for example, materials are subjected to real physical transformations. The different visual layers, the sedimentations, offer a multiple reading, always revealing new details and meanings to the observer.

Each of Kiefer's artistic productions expresses the refusal of limits, not only in monumentality or materiality but above all in the infinite wealth of resources with which he probes the depths of memory and the past. The artist made his debut on the German scene at the end of the 1960s with works which, among the first, marked a reflection on the history of the Second World War and on the emotional and cultural legacy of Germany. From here it is

began an artistic journey in which myth, religion, mysticism, poetry and philosophy come together.
