Museum of the Innocents

The Museum is located in the monumental complex designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, home to the Istituto degli Innocenti of which the Museum is part.

Created to exhibit the works of art of the ancient Spedale, a large reception center for children, the Museum has been transformed into a path that allows you to discover a cultural heritage that is unique in the world because it is deeply linked to the activities carried out for children who could not be raised by their families of origin.

The route is divided between art, history and architecture, composing a story that links the past and present of the Istituto degli Innocenti which has been committed to promoting children's rights for six centuries. The unity between works, architecture and documentary memory testifies to a never-interrupted history of welcoming and helping children and families: a continuity between the ancient Hospital and the Institute, today a public company for Personal Services (ASP) committed to promote the rights of children and adolescents through the management of educational and reception services and training, research and documentation activities. Since 2020 it has spaces equipped for temporary exhibitions of international scope, with an average of six performances per year.

From 19 May to 8 October 2023, some shots of the man who is considered one of the greatest exponents of contemporary photography will be on display: the temporary exhibition "Children" by Steve McCurry will be held at the Museo degli Innocenti.

His career took off when he crossed the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan to document the Soviet-Afghan war in the late 1970s.

His photographs captured the struggles and humanity of the Afghan people during this tumultuous time.

One of McCurry's most famous photographs, known as the "Afghan girl", was taken in a refugee camp near Pershawar, Pakistan, the photo dates back to 1984. The image of a young Afghan girl with green eyes has become a iconic of the plight of refugees around the world

Throughout his career, McCurry has traveled extensively, photographing different cultures and conflicts in countries such as India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Tibet and many others. His photographs often highlight the human element within these contexts, revealing emotions, stories and connections.

His ability to use color, the empathy and humanity he uses in his photos make them unforgettable, making him one of the most famous and loved photographers.

The use of the portrait is a focus theme in his production.
