The exceptional lion head stones were originally placed on the sides of the double-pitched roof of the Temple of Victory in Himera (Termini Imerese). Serving the function of collecting and disposing of rainwater, they were painted in bright colors, now lost: the mane in blue, the ears in red, and the muzzle in yellow; even the background was decorated with meanders, palmettes, and lotus flowers.
