The metope belonged to the decoration of temple C in Selinunte (Trapani), sacred to Apollo.
It is the representation of the myth of Perseus killing the Medusa (gorgon) in the presence of Athena, resulting in the birth of Pegasus. While the deity and the hero have human features, Medusa is depicted with her mouth wide open and her tongue on her chin, while holding Pegasus under her right arm and running on her knees.
