Metope depicting Heracles and the Amazon Hippolyta, Temple E of Selinunte (Trapani).The hero Heracles, son of Zeus and Alcmene, is depicted in a struggle with the queen of the Amazons.Heracles was tasked by Eurystheus, in whose service he was, to go to the land of the Amazons to retrieve the precious object, which he indeed obtained from Hippolyta as a token of love, provoking the wrath of her companions, who attacked him. Heracles then defeated the Amazons, killed Hippolyta, and took away the belt.
Heracles, son of Zeus and Alcmene, is depicted in a metope of Temple E of Selinunte in a struggle with the queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta. On the orders of Eurystheus, Heracles had to retrieve the precious belt of Hippolyta. The queen offered him the belt as a token of love, but this gesture provoked the anger of the other Amazons, who attacked Heracles. In response, Heracles defeated the Amazons, killed Hippolyta, and took the belt.
