The Ram is the only surviving sculpture of a pair, attributed to the circle of the great Greek sculptor Lysippus (4th century BC), and originally placed at the entrance of the Maniace Castle in Syracuse. The animal, represented crouching probably ready to pounce, is rendered with great anatomical skill and delicate chiaroscuro effects.
