It is a very important document for the reconstruction of the oldest history of Egypt. It is the oldest in the world. Other fragments of the same stele are preserved at the Petrie Museum in London and at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
It contains the annals of the first five dynasties of pharaohs of the Old Kingdom.
Originally, the Stele was placed in a temple and was meant to celebrate the pharaoh as a mediator between the divine and the human, guaranteeing the cosmic order and the prosperity of the kingdom.
