A winged boy holds out his hand to a girl dressed in the colors of the French flag. An inscription surrounds the image: “Esse qui bella gerant pro libertate aliorum” (There are those who fight for the freedom of others). The painting decorated a temporary structure set up in Reggio Emilia for the great patriotic celebration of the Peace of Lunéville. Defeated by France and its allies (including the Cisalpine Republic), the Austrian army and the second anti-French coalition accept peace, Britain refuses. Among the agreements concluded, the two parties undertake to respect the independence of the Cisalpine Republic.
