In 1860 the young republican Eugenio Bianchini tried in vain to reach Genoa to embark with the Thousand, and then managed to join Garibaldi in Sicily to participate in the landing in Reggio Calabria, gaining the rank of officer in the battle of Maddaloni. After the campaigns of 1860, he was one of the promoters of the “Cacciatori del Crostolo” battalion. He died a prisoner in Rome in 1867 from wounds sustained in the battle of Mentana, in Lazio, fought between the papal troops with the French allies, and a legion of Garibaldi, after a failed attempt to take Rome to transfer the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. .
