Carlo Ferrarini leads the Reggiana civic guard, assisted by 40 French grenadiers, who, near the castle of Montechiarugolo (RE), forces a column of 150 Austrians to surrender. The episode is remembered above all because it is the first direct confrontation between the Austrian army and an Italian military body, a prelude to the wars of independence. Napoleon, in commenting on the undertaking, defines the two Reggio victims as the first who had shed their blood for freedom.
