On the button there is an allegorical image linked to the themes of peace. Carlo Ferrarini leads the Reggiana civic guard, assisted by 40 French grenadiers, who, near the castle of Montechiarugolo (RE), forces a column of 150 Austrians to surrender. The episode is remembered above all because it is the first direct confrontation between the Austrian army and an Italian military body, a prelude to the wars of independence. Napoleon, in commenting on the undertaking, defines the two Reggio victims as the first who had shed their blood for freedom.
