Carel Albert la fat la suppa / Pius IX al gha dè al pan / E Redeschi al l’la bagneda / Con al sangov di talian. (Carlo Alberto made the soup / Pius IX gave him the bread / and Radetzki wet it / with the blood of the Italians) In these verses we want to underline the responsibilities of Carlo Alberto and Pius IX who, after the uprisings of 1848 , form a coalition with Ferdinand of Bourbon, during the clashes that lead to the wars of Independence against Austria. One of the most violent episodes is the one involving the Austrian troops under the command of Marshal Josef Radetzky, on the occasion of the Five Days of Milan.
