In this painting, Magritte subverts the relationships of relation, position, and lighting; in fact, the image never coincides with what one would expect following both the content expressed by the title, and by the elements that make up the composition. Everything is recognizable, but combined in an unexpected way, which inevitably produces different symbolic synergies that go beyond the reassuring vision of sensory reality.
