A stormy wave threatens some boats off the coast of Kanagawa, while Mount Fuji covered in snow in the background seems to witness the scene. Through this representation, the author wanted to signify two opposite tensions experienced by humans towards the sea: the ancestral fear of the unknown and the looming desire to overcome their fears to overcome even seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
