The infanta Ana Victoria, daughter of Philip V of Spain, was sent to the French court at the age of three to become the wife of Louis XV. In 1725, it was considered inescapable that the king should have offspring shortly. The young woman was returned to Spain as still too young, and Louis XV married Maria Leszczyńska , daughter of the dethroned King of Poland.
