The museum was born from the bequest of Annibale degli Abbati Oliveri , an eighteenth-century scholar who donated his huge library and archaeological heritage to Pesaro. The new itinerary documents a thousand years of history of the area - from the Piceno to the late Imperial age - and is divided into four sections: the Piceno necropolis of Novilara, the lucus pisaurensis (important place of worship connected to the Romanization of the area), the town hall of Pisaurum and eighteenth-century collecting.
