ALLEGED PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG GIRL OF THE POULETT FAMILY, around 1630/35 English school, 17th century. The burgundy red color of the dress and the thin black ribbon that encircles this girl's neck are very common symbols of mourning in Europe in the mid-17th century. The missal held by the young woman in her right hand seems to corroborate this assumption. The prayer book could in turn allude to the need for children to receive a good religious education.
