From 21 September to 24 November 2024
The Palazzo Magnani Foundation presents, from September 21 to November 24, 2024, at the headquarters of Palazzo da Mosto, the retrospective dedicated to Luciano Bertoli, for the first time in his city after his passing in 2021. Curated by Martina Corgnati, the exhibition is titled Meanwhile. The Mandelbrot curves in reference to the eponymous painting series, created starting from the Nineties and never exhibited to the public, kept by the family in the futuristic studio-home of the artist near the Castle of Canossa.
The main body of the exhibition, aimed at rediscovering the interest and originality of a research far from the artistic and commercial mainstream, is composed precisely of the paintings called Meanwhile. The Mandelbrot curves, capable of highlighting the artist's keen interest in exact sciences.
The Mandelbrot set, named after the Polish physicist who discovered fractals, is a set of complex numbers, graphically delineated in 1984 by Heinz-Otto Peitgen and John H. Hubbard and made popular by a cover of the well-known high dissemination magazine Scientific American.
Among the audience of enthusiasts captivated by that colorful image is Bertoli, who at that moment discovers a different artistic-creative potential inherent in his keen interest in physics and the world of science in general; the mechanistic-dadaist dimension, so long explored from the Seventies onwards, gives way to a more fantasy and evocative research, which pushes the viewer towards free navigations towards the less intuitive laws of physics and towards the dance of organic molecules in a space-time different from the linear perception of ordinary.
