The cultural programming of the Palazzo Te Foundation for the year 2024 was dedicated to the theme of metamorphosis, a fascinating concept rooted in classical mythology and continuing into 2025, the year of the Cinquecentenario. Inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses and Renaissance literary references, Giulio Romano's pictorial cycle explores and represents the constant and mysterious transformation that permeates the natural and human world, intertwining with the history of the Gonzaga family and their aesthetic and political concerns within the historicity of this place. The residence of Federico II Gonzaga, a symbol of cultural and architectural transformation, has become the pulsating heart of a research that has investigated the changes, transitions, and transfigurations that have characterized its identity for centuries. The images capture not only the materiality of transformations but also the very essence of change that permeates space and time, weaving together history, art, and nature.
In this context, the photographic workshop curated by Ruggero Ughetti came to life as a project of contemporary reflection and reinterpretation of the theme. For seven months starting from April 2024, seven photographers – Rosy Fezzardi, Antonella Gialdi, Simona Marchesini, Ilenia Martinotti, Mauro Rossi, Francesco Stelluto, Silvia Vincenzi – each explored the concept of "metamorphosis" with their own style and approach. The photographic project produced a corpus of about a hundred photographs that, through the lens of the participants, offer a new and fascinating interpretation of the Palazzo, highlighting new meanings and interpretations of a historic place. This visual heritage, the result of intense research and reflection, was donated to the Palazzo Te Foundation.
From March 13 to September 16, 2025, Spazio Te hosts the photographic project by Simona Marchesini, which explores a material that tells its story, dense in its temporal flow and for five hundred years has left us the message that "nothing perishes."The walls of Palazzo Te demonstrate how the passage of time can transform everything, becoming itself the creator and artist of abstract images, fantastic universes where the gaze can linger and travel in these consumed, yet at the same time, new worlds. A metamorphosis always in progress, in continuous movement, a metamorphosis that, in this case, makes the images ephemeral. Drawing inspiration from the frescoes of Orpheus and Eurydice in the Loggia delle Muse, Simona Marchesini provides visual insights that, with an investigative spirit, present the conservative soul of the walls of Palazzo Te. Plaster, mortar, and brick alternate with preparatory drawings, stucco, and stippling, revealing fractures, signs, and halos like an informal painting.
