The painting portrays an agitated Trinity in a sort of Baroque Throne of Mercy. Christ at the top left of the canvas points his finger towards the city of Naples while with his right arm raised he threatens it with a thunderbolt. San Gennaro begs Christ to stop his fury. God the Father, marginalized in this celestial drama at the top right of the canvas, makes ambiguous gestures of blessing towards his son. Naples, far away, delicately portrayed between the sea and the distant hills, lies beneath evanescent clouds, peaceful and blissful.
