Augusto Perez
Stable, 1973, charcoal on paper, mm 350×500
He was born in 1929 in Messina. As a child, he moved to Naples where he attended the Faculty of Architecture, but from the 1950s onwards, his passion for sculpture took over. After an initial experience working alongside Guttuso in Terracina in a neorealist trend, he dedicated himself to sculpture with strong plastic accents. His sculpture tends towards a symbolic value, with his favorite themes being shadow, metamorphosis, and the duplicated image in the mirror.
Primarily a sculptor, the drawings in the collection appear as projects for sculptures, as evidenced by the podium on which the horse rests. In December 2000, about a month after his passing, an important retrospective was held at Castel dell’Ovo in Naples.
