The oratory of San Desiderio

The oratory of San Desiderio is located in the historic center of Pistoia. Originally it was the church of San Desiderio founded around 1300 and included the Benedictine female monastery. In 1440 the monastery was suppressed and then transformed into a hospital for pilgrims traveling to or from Pistoia. At the end of the eighteenth century it became a simple timber warehouse until the beginning of the twentieth century. Today of the original building remain mostly the frescoes by Sebastiano Vini with the Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand. The fresco depicts the centurion Acacius who with 9000 soldiers, fighting in the name of Christ, managed to defeat an army of 100,000 men. The fresco is today considered the most important of the artist, considered among the most representative in the local panorama of the second half of the sixteenth century.
