From 23 November to 2 March 2025
On Saturday, November 23rd at 4:00 pm at the National Museum of Sea Archaeology in Caorle (VE), the art exhibition The Wonder of Waiting. The "errant" knights by Domenico Castaldi will be inaugurated, organized by the Regional Directorate of National Museums of Veneto in collaboration with the Neapolitan artist. Thus, as has been customary in recent years, the experimentation at the Caorle Museum continues with new connections between ancient and modern, archaeology and contemporary art, starting from stories and themes that unite distant epochs and create the conditions to discover points of contact between the humanity that preceded us and that of the present, defining our current cultural identity.
The "errant" knights by Domenico Castaldi, sculptures that evoke ancestral expressive forms of ancient Italic peoples, seem like warriors arrived from mysterious distances, as if they had crossed the sea; and they seek, finding it, a landing place, an anchorage. The sea as a metaphor for the unknown, for risk, but also as a harbor, a cove, or a beach where every storm subsides. The National Museum of Sea Archaeology in Caorle tells a story of voyages, shipwrecks, but also of exchanges, anchorages, arrivals, departures, conflicts, calm, and pacification. In this context, Castaldi's warrior-knights meet the museum's artifacts; each has its own story to tell: the artifacts through the transparency of the centuries, the knights through a creative journey in the transparency of inner life. The knights in the Museum of the Sea question the artifacts, wanting to know the life and human actions once underlying the ancient artifacts. Thus, an extremely dynamic dialogue is established, an interlocution that erases distances. The knights, standing among the artifacts, grasp their historical message, and symmetrically, the artifacts recognize in the knights the protagonists of the same journey. The anchors preserved in the museum represent the sign of sharing a history between artifacts and knights; the anchors as the realization of the common hope of reaching a safe harbor from the risks of the sea and life. The encounter between the museum's artifacts and Castaldi's knights helps to understand apparently different languages, but, in a dimension of silence and listening, both can be summarized in the great flow of existence.
