Description

The episode depicted is taken from the book of Genesis - Stories of Joseph. The Jewish Joseph, son of Jacob and Rachel, after suffering imprisonment, is released from prison by virtue of his ability to interpret the dreams of the Pharaoh of Egypt. Appointed minister, he was sent to carry out an extensive survey of the cereal products intended for food existing in the country in view of the famine he had predicted. The painting shows the departure of Joseph wearing a suit of fine linen (fine linen cloth) and seated on a splendid golden chariot drawn by fiery white horses; a young flute player precedes him. In the background you can see the caravan of companions mixed with dancing girls to the sound of tambourines. In the background a fantasy Egypt, evoked by memory, or rather by transferring into an image the conventional idea of the ancient where the regulation banana trees appear, but also Roman temples, arches, pyramids in a disheveled and picturesque vision of the ancient that is typical of the era. It is the triumph of the fairy tale with a happy ending, the feast of color and the triumph of painting. The evanescent, almost tapestry colors (powder blue, light green, ivory, greyish), raised here and there by pieces of red, make the painting so light and precious as to seem "blown" like Murano glass.
