Formerly owned by the Dutch painter Hendrick Willem Mesdag, collector of works by Mancini, and later by Arturo Toscanini, from whom it passed to his daughter Wally, the painting probably depicts (Di Majo 1991) the painter's cousin, Agrippina, daughter of Andrea's uncles and Noemi Ruggeri, inhabitants of Rome, where Mancini was a guest between 1885 and 1890. Developed vertically, it depicts the young woman sitting with her hands intertwined, her pensive face turned upwards, a blanket on her knees (Agrippina was of poor health) on which rest a book and a bouquet of flowers. The fat and sumptuous chromatic matter paradoxically finds its tuning fork in the opulent black of the dress, which contrasts with the white material of what would appear to be an apron. C. Gelao
