The theme of the Lamentation, which represents the pain on the lifeless body of Christ after the deposition from the cross, is frequently repeated by Lanino and is also present in the cartoons and drawings used by his workshop. The tragic nature of the event is suggested without patheticism, but with sincere affliction. The soft colors and the chiaroscuro nuance, more controlled than in the previous works, show the painter's full maturity.
