One day, long ago, his mother sat by the window intent on making lace. The soft morning light flooded both of them. He saw that what mattered were the spaces, those between the threads that form the decoration, not the threads themselves. (Hilary Mantel: A Place of Greater Safety) Fragile Stories by artists Mandy Bonnell and Déirdre Kelly explores the traditional domestic practice of lace-making and pays tribute to the extraordinary skill of its anonymous makers with contemporary works inspired by the extraordinary collection of artifacts from the Burano Lace Museum. The exhibition expresses the desire to participate in the rich creativity of the female hand, in harmony with the delicate rhythms of nature. A conversation with the lace makers of the past that alludes to fragility and durability, revealed here in delicate objects and splendid decorations practiced on precious papers and maps. Bonnell's work originates from the pages of lace design pattern books passed down from generation to generation. Her perforated designs refer to floral and Venetian decorations like the Rose Point and repetitive rhythms of stitches expressed in grids of minute pencil marks. Déirdre Kelly plays with the language of cartography to create intricate works in paper cutouts from which emerge landscapes, paths, and impossible directions, oscillating between land and water, as if looking from her Venetian studio towards the Grand Canal.
