For his first solo exhibition in Italy, Roméo Mivekannin has conceived a cohesive body of new paintings that unfolds through different rooms of the Collezione Maramotti. The exhibition comprises about twenty paintings on black velvet, mostly large in size, drawing from Mivekannin's vast iconographic universe enriched by inspirations gathered during his visits to Emilia-Romagna and his connection with the Italian artistic and cultural space. The past, its heritage, and its spirits, which constitute the history of the world and resonate in contemporary times, emerge strongly in this project, originating from the questioning of the Self on a formal and existential level, rooting in a reflection on the human condition. Appropriating, to inhabit and reconstruct them, iconographies of classic artworks by Masaccio and Caravaggio, photographs derived from the press and reportage, movements and archetypes of dance and cinema - from Pina Bausch to Pier Paolo Pasolini, Sergei Parajanov, and Leos Carax - or figures extracted from his personal archives, Mivekannin shapes a multifaceted self-portrait, becoming a mirror of images that fascinate and question him. The self-portrait, incorporated as punctually as pervasively, is the tool through which Mivekannin, replacing the original characters of the representations, enters the narrative as a subject - a powerful, phantasmic, disturbing Self in the body of the Other from the Self. His face seems to emerge from the depths of the night, his penetrating gaze scrutinizes the observer, overturning the logics of composition construction, subverting roles and power dynamics (internal and external to the work), and shaping an unstable, constantly transforming space.
