From 12 December to 18 January 2026
Mother, the latest work that the American director and artist Robert Wilson created before his passing in July 2025, is a piece that involves the audience in an emotional and immersive experience, transcending any religious connotation to evoke the universal and eternal mystery of the Pietà: the pain and mercy of every mother holding a lifeless child in her arms.
Here, Michelangelo's dramatic masterpiece (presented during the event with the historic plaster cast commissioned in 1953 to the renowned conservator and restorer Cesare Gariboldi) appears in a strict and unique score of light, enveloped in the sounds of strings and the voices of a touching Stabat Mater by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, one of the greatest living composers. Additionally, the immersive experience is enhanced by a series of original drawings by Robert Wilson inspired by the sculpture and the entire creation of the work.
The project enters the most spectacular gallery of the Museum, completely darkening it, scenically and abstractly reconstructing the room of the former Spanish Hospital in the Sforza Castle in Milan where the Rondanini Pietà is now located, and focuses participants' attention on an experience that blends performance, visual installation, and sound concertation.
