An exhibition proposed and presented by the Embassy of Portugal in Italy, promoted by the Department of Culture of Rome Capital and the Special Company Palaexpo, with Camões, I. P., the Ministry of Culture of Portugal and curated by Alessandra Mauro with Contrasto. The exhibition The dawn I was waiting for. Portugal, April 25, 1974 - Images of a revolution retraces, fifty years later, the events of the Carnation Revolution (so named for the gesture of a woman, Celeste Caeiro, who began offering carnations to soldiers in a square in Lisbon): a major collective event, a turning point for the country, its reforms, and its social life; for cities like Lisbon, discovering a new form of collective participation, for the media inaugurating new forms of communication. The exhibition offers a unique and engaging view of one of the most significant moments in Portuguese and European contemporary history, an opportunity to remember those days and reflect on the social changes achieved. Lisbon, April 25, 1974, 00:20. From the radio station "Renascença" the notes of a song "Grândola Vila Morena" start playing. It is the signal to start the military operations that quickly lead to the end of the dictatorship and the beginning of a new era for the country and the whole of Europe. In short, high-ranking officials loyal to the regime are arrested; strategic points are occupied, such as the airport and the political prison; dictator Marcello Caetano surrenders to the rebels in the afternoon while at 23:20 the law decreeing the dissolution of the National Assembly and the State Council is approved. In less than 24 hours, the country leaves behind the absolutist regime in the jubilation of the people who take to the streets alongside the military. It is a rapid, peaceful, mass revolution. The only one of the twentieth century in the European continent. An event that involved, interested, and moved more than one generation of citizens, political activists, or journalists who saw in Portugal, in its ability to shake off decades of dictatorship and emerge from a tragic colonial past, the possibility of thinking and realizing a different life.
