An exhibition curated by Francesca Fontana and Lorenzo Respi, which celebrates 50 years of the comic Lupo Alberto, which debuted in 1974 on the pages of Corriere dei Ragazzi.
Born in the Modena area from the pencil of a very young Guido Silvestri aka Silver (born in 1952, in Carpi (MO)), together with the entire McKenzie farm he manages in a short time to conquer the hearts of Italians, guaranteeing a longevity that few other comics can boast: enough to think that the Lupo periodical has exceeded 440 issues.
Lupo Alberto, the curators explain, “does not embody the perfect hero: he is nice, good, a little unlucky and often insecure; he is used to facing disappointments and setbacks, but he has the great merit of knowing how to take life with irony and lightness, sometimes even carelessly. Furthermore, in his stories there is no shortage of references to current events, politics, social facts and issues; the farm, in short, reflects the same problems, the same concerns and the same psychological mechanisms as the real world”.
Such an important birthday just couldn't go unnoticed, especially in the city where Lupo was born; through this exhibition, Modena has the opportunity to thank Silver for having created not only an iconic character, but a true cultural phenomenon.
The exhibition, created in collaboration with McK, Lucca Comics & Games and Lucca Collezionando, does not claim to be exhaustive - the imposing mass of the production on Lupo Alberto would not allow this - but aims to examine the evolutionary path of comics in starting from the first strips through some of the stories dearest to the public or most representative of the years in which they were created, delving into specific themes and subjects. It also intends to give an account of the various forms in which the Wolf has manifested itself, such as the different types of merchandising, books, trading cards, cartoons and video games; finally, it illustrates how Lupo Alberto continues to boldly renew itself thanks to the inventiveness of the young authors of Tutto unaltro Lupo.
