The Leeds City Museum, founded in 1819, is housed in the former Institute of Mechanics built by Cuthbert Brodrick, in Millennium Square. It is part of the museums and galleries of Leeds. The collection is extremely rich and among the most successful pieces are the giant stuffed Leeds tiger, the giant moose skeleton and the carved wooden wagon. The Leeds City Museum houses several artifacts that change systematically, but are mainly made up of artifacts from Leeds history. The central hall has a large map of Leeds drawn on the floor. Here is also a scale model of the Quarry Hill apartments. The natural history gallery, called "Life on Earth", has exhibits: from a meteorite to dinosaur dung (coprolite). In 2019, the skeleton of a long-finned pilot whale was hung from the ceiling just outside the gallery. There are several vintage taxidermal mounts preserved by James Dickinson in 2008, including the Armley Hippo, the Leeds Polar Bear, and the Leeds Irish Elk. The Leeds Tiger is certainly the museum's flagship: the animal, from Bengal, arrived in Leeds in 1862. It was killed by Colonel Charles Reid in India in March 1860. It has been on display for over 150 years. Other galleries in the museum deal with archeology, Hellenistic and Asian art, and history. The third floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions.
