The Archaeological Museum of Santa Maria delle Monache is located in the heart of the historic center of the city of Isernia, inside a former Benedictine convent built in the early Middle Ages under the patronage of the Lombard counts. Since 1934, the Museum was first a municipal antiquarium , with a collection of inscriptions and stone artifacts found in the surrounding area, and then enriched over time with the museum display of some of the most important archaeological remains of the Republican and Imperial age found in the town and countryside of Isernia. Reopened on 1 August 2022, the Museum houses an archaeological collection that tells the story of the territory and the city of Isernia, from the archaic age up to the Middle Ages. Furthermore, a dedicated section exhibits the archaeological material of the Italic Sanctuary of Pietrabbondante telling the devotion of the Samnites.
