In this print we recognize the kabuki actor Iwai Hanshiro V (1776-1847) performing the fox dance, probably inserted in the drama Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees. In the foreground, the actor is caught dancing lively, resting on his left foot and holding a small drum with his right hand. The movement of the scene is concentrated only in this figure, while behind him the setting is much more rigid: the singer and the shamisen player seem to act as a pure background - even if the details and colors of the clothes are cared for. Even the stroke used appears different: soft and supple for the actor, hard and broken for the musicians.
