The painting is mentioned by Bonafede (1888) in the Municipality of L'Aquila with reference to Ruther. It was considered a certain work of the painter by Month (1968, 1971). The work in question is typical of Ruther's production, close to the paintings executed before he settled in Italy. Frimmel (1886, 1918) noted tangencies with Castiglione's style, mainly due to the common reference to Flemish painting and the choice of the genre.
