The sculptor Antonio Canova, like many of his contemporaries, considered the masterpieces of Greek sculpture, with the perfect bodies of athletes and the beautiful figures of the goddesses, the highest level ever reached by art. The only chance to be honored and become a great artist was therefore to learn from those masters, reviving the forms and beauty of the classical world through a new classicism.
