Maria lies stretched out on the coffin covered by a heavy black cloak, slightly softened by floral ornaments. Around her, the twelve apostles perform the funeral homage; one of them holds in his hands a belt of Mary's dress that fell from the sky at the moment of the ascension. Above, on a gold background, Mary within a Mystical Almond is lifted by six angels. The painting is distinguished above all for the careful realism with which the heads of the Apostles are defined.
Curiosity: The depiction of the Marian belt falling from above indicates that the Madonna ascends to heaven not only with her soul but also with her body, an iconography particularly dear to the Dominican environment.
