The painting, originally created for the local church of Sant'Agostino, qualifies as one of the most representative works of the painter from Caldarola. Not only in terms of its style, but also for the historical moment that it delineates in Simone's figurative development. The date 1570 places it at the beginning of his independent career, free from the partnership with his brother Giovan Francesco, which had characterized his activity throughout the seventh decade of the century. The scene presents in the center, near the ruins of an ancient building, Mary and Saint Joseph next to the Child lying on the ground; behind them the ox and the donkey. On the left, standing Saint Nicholas of Tolentino in prayer, in the lower right corner the patron and in the left corner two shepherds. In the background a mountainous landscape with a castle. At the bottom, above a rock, the artist's signature and the date: SIMON D MAGIS/TRI DA CALDAROLA P. MDLXX. At the top, three cherubs hold a scroll with the inscription in Latin GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO ET IN TERRA PA(X OMINIBUS) (BONAE VO) LUNTA(TIS); (Glory to God in the highest and peace on earth to people of good will).
The painting offers a comprehensive reading of the aesthetic position assumed by the artist, when he was led to consider, on one hand, the result of his experiences in the Marche region and, on the other hand, the relevance of the most recent stimuli derived from his interaction with the Roman artistic environment.Title:
