The Holy hermit, venerated as the protector of animals, is depicted standing frontally. He leans on a stick with his right hand, holding a book in his left hand. At his feet, two pigs of the Sienese breed are painted, with two groups of kneeling devotees on the sides: seven men on the right, seven women on the left. One of them holds a baby completely wrapped in white and red striped swaddling clothes. On the two sides of the golden background, two squared rocky volumes appear, on which two trees grow and two pairs of birds are visible. At the bottom, a ruined inscription reads: MCCCLIII DIE
Curiosity: In the Middle Ages, pig fat was used as a soothing remedy for the so-called St. Anthony's Fire, a painful skin inflammation contracted by farmers especially during the harvest.
