The Basilica of San Francesco in Arezzo is located in the historic center of the city. The basilica is considered as an example of Gothic architecture, rich in frescoes of the fourteenth century painting. Among the masterpieces present is the "Legend of the True Cross" by Piero della Francesca, an extraordinary cycle of paintings by the artist between 1453 and 1459. Thanks to the recent restoration it was possible to bring the original fresco back to light. The frescoed cycle tells the stories of the “Golden Legend” of Jacopo da Varagine of the thirteenth century. Many important representations of Tuscan and Italian artists of the fourteenth century are based on this iconography. In the basilica of great value are undoubtedly the stained glass windows by Guglielmo de Marcillat, the large wooden crucifix on the high altar, the frescoes by Spinello Aretino and the Tarlati Chapel with the Annunciation attributed to Luca Signorelli. The lower church, divided into three naves, is used as an exhibition hall for temporary exhibitions.
