Priory palace

Priory palace

The Palazzo dei Priori of Viterbo is the symbolic monument of the city's civic power. Initially conceived as the residence of the Governor of the Heritage of San Pietro in Tuscia, it only became the seat of the Priors in 1510.

Currently several areas of the Palace are accessible: the Palatine Chapel with the pictorial testimonies of Filippo Cavarozzi and Marzio Ganassini; the Hall of the Madonna, dedicated to the protector of the Diocese: the Madonna della Quercia; the Sala Regia with the frescoes of the castles that were under the dominion of Viterbo on the ceiling and the late 16th century frescoes created by Baldassarre Croce; the Council Room still used today for Municipality meetings; the Hall of Landscapes and the Hall of Aurora. Beyond the main floor of the Palace you can visit the Museo dei Portici , a branch of the Luigi Rossi Danielli Civic Museum of Viterbo. Housed inside are two works by Sebastiano Luciani, better known as Sebastiano del Piombo, the Flagellation (1525) and the Pietà (1512-1516).
