The Zerial Art Project presents, from May 25 to July 20, 2024 at the Marta Czok Foundation in Venice, the exhibition Embodied Histories curated by Alice Montanini. With the sponsorship of the Embassy of the Republic of Zimbabwe, the exhibition brings for the first time to Italy the work of Zimbabwean artists Peter Musami and Mukudzei Muzondo. Through a selection of unpublished works created specifically for the exhibition, Embodied Histories explores the themes of memory, trauma, and cultural heritage in the intricate context of Zimbabwe's tumultuous history, fitting into the context of the 60th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia curated by Adriano Pedrosa Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere. Against the shared background of Shona culture, the artistic expression of Musami and Muzondo converges and diverges, outlining a discourse on the body as a vehicle of trauma, which simultaneously configures itself as a scarred landscape and a symbolic place of healing and reconciliation. Muzondo's work is characterized by a figurative narrative rich in both historical and personal references. Through densely layered compositions, the artist delves into the memory of a resilient nation, marked by multiple struggles and oppressions, revealing the intricate interaction between socio-political events, memory, and tradition that has shaped the contemporary cultural identity of Zimbabwe. The persistent echo of colonialism permeates the cultural confrontation with the oppressive Western capitalist system, where the voices of non-dominant cultures are suffocated by the shadow of a still tangible colonial past. Musami represents the complex non-linearity of trauma through an abstraction where the socio-political reference reverberates like a silent yet strongly tangible echo. Through collage, the artist presents us with an emotional landscape in which past and present overlap, becoming the stage for a psyche fragmented by traumatic experiences. In this mosaic of layered memories emerges the creative gesture of the artist, who through the act of tearing, cutting, and subsequently reassembling each fragment, gives life to a new composition. This process transmutes artistic expression into a symbolic path of healing, a visual and pulsating testimony of the regenerative power inherent in each wound. Through the convergence of Muzondo's figurative symbolism and Musami's abstract expressionism, this exhibition offers a multifaceted contemporary narrative deeply rooted in Zimbabwe's political history.
