From April 13 to November 24, 2024, the Emilio and Annabianca Vedova Foundation in Venice presents the exhibition Silentium by the Austrian painter Eduard Angeli at the Magazzino del Sale alle Zattere space, curated by Philip Rylands. The exhibition showcases a corpus of 14 works, including nocturnal and diurnal landscapes, interiors, and constructions characterized by an unsettling stillness and the absence of human figures: compositions of deafening silence, of which Venice, due to its predisposition to surrealism and symbolism, is a natural protagonist. On November 12, 2019, Venice was hit by the most serious high water event recorded since the 1960s. During those days, saltwater also flooded the ground floor studio of the house where Eduard Angeli (Vienna, 1942) had been living for fifteen years. The event caused damage and destruction to his works, and it upset him to the point of leaving the city and returning to Vienna. After this painful departure, the exhibition dedicated to Eduard Angeli by the Vedova Foundation marks his artistic return to the city. "In the exhibition program of the Vedova Foundation, the production of Vedova is often compared with that of different authors," emphasizes the President of the Foundation, Alfredo Bianchini. "In this case, imagining a dialogue-comparison between Angeli and Vedova would not be possible, in my opinion, to hypothesize forced coincidences and/or overlaps between the two artists. However, a common theme unites them. I am referring to a recurring theme in Vedova, that is, the clash of situations. An infinite clash of situations in the human path that, synthesized, expresses the contrast between good and evil, in all its meanings and manifestations. Ultimately, Eduard Angeli's silence seems like an uncontrollable clash-cry that reaches all parts of the world."
