Diocesan Museum and Tiepolo Galleries

Since 1995, the Diocesan Museum and Tiepolo Galleries has been located in the historic Patriarchal Palace, now the Archbishop's Palace, one of the most beautiful and important buildings in the city of Udine. The Diocesan Museum is the place where you can admire the most extraordinary pictorial feats that Giambattista Tiepolo gave to the city of Udine. To crown the complex architectural redevelopment of the Palace, carried out by the architect Domenico Rossi, the patriarch Dionisio Dolfin commissioned Tiepolo to decorate the ceiling of the grand staircase. With this fresco depicting the "Fall of the Rebel Angels" (1726), a collaborative relationship between Tiepolo and the Dolfins began, which would continue in the following years with the decoration of the Guest Gallery and the Red Room, an important place used as an ecclesiastical court. However, those who arrive at the Museum looking for Tiepolo are also surprised and enchanted by the many other artistic riches that the Diocesan Museum holds. It is impossible not to be overwhelmed by the charm of the Patriarchal Library, by the refinement of the stuccoes of the Yellow Room or by the kaleidoscopic play of grotesques on the ceiling of the Blue Room attributed to Giovanni da Udine. And again... how can you resist the temptation of being able to admire one of the most important collections of wooden sculpture in Italy, with extraordinary works ranging from the 14th century to the 18th century, or even small treasures of sacred goldsmithery and paintings of notable historical and artistic interest. Not only Tiepolo, therefore, with his frescoes, but many other artists and many other works that make the Diocesan Museum and Tiepolo Galleries a treasure chest of art, culture and traditions in the heart of the city of Udine.
