From 4 November to 7 November 2021
Cripta747 is pleased to present “Who Is It?”, A project by Mattia Capelletti, curator in residence and winner of the research grant of Cripta747 Residency Program 2021.
The voice is at the center of a research that Capelletti has been carrying out since 2016, through the Idioletta platform together with the artist Costanza Candeloro, and which he subsequently deepened in the context of his studies in Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam.
With “Who Is It?”, Capelletti focuses in particular on vocal timbre, a sound quality that allows the identification of the speaker and describes a listening policy based on recognition and conditioned by culturally specific norms.
The construction of identity is articulated around the stamp, through collective processes that involve both the speaker and the listener. Not at all bound to an immutable corporeality, as it is generally considered, the timbre is rather to be understood as an intersubjective experiment in which the voice welcomes the other into itself through its infinite possibilities, disregarding expectations and disturbing the normative binaries. Captured in its function as a trace of individuality, timbre becomes an object of biopolitical control by means of the listening technologies with which we interact more and more frequently. But it is precisely in relation to surveillance technologies, of voice cloning, that the horizon of a new politics of the voice unfolds, characterized by tactics of manipulation of the timbre often articulated through the creative abuse of the same technologies that try to control it.
