In the spaces of Villa d'Este, from May 16 to July 7, 2024, the Autonomous Institute Villa Adriana and Villa d'Este - VILLÆ hosts Mirabilia et Antiquaria: works for a collection, an exhibition of works by artists Stefano Arienti, Flavio Favelli, Nico Vascellari, and Nicola Verlato, recently included in the contemporary art collection of the Institute, thanks to the PAC 2022-2023 call for proposals from the General Directorate of Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture. Together, the public will also be able to see the work of the artist Petra Feriancová and the works of Thomas Braida, Gianni Caravaggio, Francesco de Grandi, Mariangela Levita, Andrea Mastrovito, Giusy Pirrotta, Davide Serpetti, Luca Trevisani, Luca Vitone, already part of the collection and gathered in the permanent exhibition titled Contemporary Art Deposit at the Sanctuary of Hercules Victor. The Institute's contemporary activities aim to bring new narratives between past and present, to sensitize the public to different ways of experiencing the sites and to a different awareness of the places. The exhibition project Mirabilia et Antiquaria: works for a collection will be presented to the public and the press on the occasion of the opening at Villa d'Este of the Garden of Melàngholi - Thursday, May 23, 2024, at 5:30 pm. "The continuous research in the contemporary art scene and the acquisition of works aim to strengthen the connection between the history of the Institute and the usability of these places in the present," says Andrea Bruciati, Director of the Villæ of Tivoli. "The dialogue of the new collection with the deposits and the works on site emphasizes the intention to continue the principle of innovation and modernity that has always characterized the existence of Villa Adriana and Villa d'Este, at the forefront at the time of their foundation and which have dictated the principles of aesthetics in their era. The opening of the Garden of Melàngholi, which now houses the rose garden with the new Rosa Arsa Estensis, is also an event marked by novelty that retraces the footsteps of the past when there were botanical collections in the Renaissance, also fitting into our contemporary attention towards nature and biodiversity." The project of acquiring contemporary art aims, on the international scene, to enhance the most significant artistic experiences; furthermore, all the selected artists have been chosen because they possess the identifying characteristics that distinguish the sites that will host and preserve their works: Villa Adriana, Villa d'Este, and the Sanctuary of Hercules Victor. From the structural analysis of the ruin, declined through the code of the column, the work of Flavio Favelli, Traliccio Tunisi (2019), is inserted, a plastic assemblage that rises within the fragmentary architectural argumentation of the Adrianeo site. In this perspective, there is also the reflection on the myth of Niobe (the most present in all the sites of the Institute) in the pictorial work of Nicola Verlato, Apollo that shoots the children of Niobe (2021), which has made the dialectic with history its focal point of interest; as well as Stefano Arienti, who in the works Love and Psyche (from Antonio Canova, 1991) and The Encounter (from Andrea Mantegna, 2006) has placed his analysis of the image of linguistic reflection on the history of art. Nature then wants to be the center of the work of the pressing issue of Nico Vascellari, who in his video A Great Circle (2003) places at the center of the investigation the relationship of man with biological cycles.
