Shrewsbury Castle was built by order of William I around 1067. Substantially expanded, it served as a base for operations in Wales, an administrative center and as a defensive fortification for the city, threatened by the river. The wall, of which little remains today, was later added to the defenses, in response to Welsh raids. Today the area known as the walls still retains a small stretch of it and a single tower (tower of the city walls), which is owned by the National Trust. The Shropshire Horticultural Society bought the castle from the previous private owner in 1924 and donated it to the town making it the seat of Shrewsbury Town Council Chambers for over 50 years. In 2019 it was renamed Soldiers of Shropshire Museum. Moreover, thanks to an intense work of excavations, in the same year the remains of the original moat that surrounded the motte of around 1067 were found, together with a series of medieval ceramics and two arrowheads or crossbow bolts. Continuing the excavations in 2020, the so-called "high-ranking parties" were recovered, including the bones of a pike and perhaps a swan. The museum's collection combines the collections of King's Shropshire Light Infantry and Shropshire Yeomanry.
