The Palaexpo Special Company enthusiastically welcomed the opportunity to host the exhibition dedicated to the figure of Enrico Berlinguer for the centenary of his birth in the spaces of the Pavilions of the Mattatoio in Rome.
Enrico Berlinguer was one of the protagonists of the political history of the twentieth century. Secretary of the Italian Communist Party from 1972 to 1984, and before that a militant and leader of his party. Leader of rare moral caliber, rooted in the real country and esteemed by his opponents.
On the occasion of the centenary of his birth, the aim of the exhibition is to contribute to reviving the political legacy of Enrico Berlinguer by retracing his biography through original audiovisual, sound, photographic materials and archival documents.
The exhibition itinerary is divided into five main thematic sections: Affects, The manager, In the Italian crisis, The global dimension, Current affairs and the future.
Affections. The section is dedicated to the representation of the most emotional, private and family dimension of Berlinguer's life. In addition to archive materials, the section is enriched with books, photographs and personal objects belonging to the leader's daily life made available by the family.
The manager. The second section traces the history of Berlinguer as party leader, reconstructing his entire path of communist militancy from his enrollment in the youth section of the PCI of Sassari in 1943, until his election as Deputy Secretary of the PCI in 1969.
In the Italian crisis. Elected Secretary of the PCI in 1972, Enrico Berlinguer leads the PCI at the height of the Italian crisis. It is this third section that reconstructs the context in which the communist leader operates, retracing the most crucial moments of his political biography up to his premature death in 1984, on backdrop of a profound crisis in society.
The global dimension. The fourth section presents the global dimension of Berlinguer's leadership. Here the most salient aspects of his political action in relation to the international dimension are presented: the reflections on the events in Chile, the redefinition of the relationship with the Soviet Union, Eurocommunism, the liberation movements of Vietnam, the mending of relations with the People's Republic of China, to name just a few.
Current affairs and future. The last section questions Berlinguer's political legacy as a central figure of the republican pantheon, appreciated and recognized beyond the borders of his own world and capable of drawing attention to global issues and problems that have become increasingly pressing in recent decades.
Alongside the sections strictly dedicated to the leader's political biography, three other thematic sections delve into fundamental elements of the historical political context of the years in which Berlinguer led the PCI.
